Scaled BMW X5 Windscreen Printed

A person called us to see if we could print a scale size Windscreen for a model car (a BMW X5)

This was the process,

  1. We received a digital model of the entire car from an online source, which we imported into Auto-desk 3DSmaxModel X5
  2. We the isolated the Windscreen screen Model X5 only
  3. Looking at the item we found that the Resolution was too low for such a print, so Using ZBrush we increased the point count and refitted the meshRefine and prep for printing
  4. Once done we then prepare the file for an clear SLA printReady to print SLA
  5. The sand and cleaning process was then started20171006_131227
  6. using paper starting @120 Grit  working our way all the way up to 2400 Grit and polish 20171011_145148_001

The result speaks for it’s self.

New Materials

Over the last months we have been working hard  on new high temperature filaments.

Working Alongside NeraTek we now are able to print prepare and distribute PEEK, PPSU and PEI parts.

PEEK

Which is  Polyether Ether Ketone (PEEK)  PEEK polymers are obtained by step-growth polymerization. PEEK is a semicrystalline thermoplastic with excellent mechanical and chemical resistance properties that are retained to high temperatures. PEEK is regarded as one of the highest performing engineering thermoplastics in the world. PEEK is used to fabricate items used in demanding applications in aerospace, automotive, oil and gas and medical industries.

As it requires hot end Temps over 400 degC and bed temps of over 150 degC along with ambient temps close to 100 degC it is extremely difficult to work with. At the moment there is not a production machine capable of reliably printing it on or below 80 microns.

But we Can now print this reliably with our own bespoke system.

 

PPSU

Which is Polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) is an amorphous high performance thermoplastic offering better impact resistance and chemical resistance than PEI. PPSU can operate in temperatures up to 180Cᵒ. PPSU has superior hydrolysis resistance when compared to other amorphous thermoplastics as measured by steam autoclaving cycles, it has virtually unlimited steam sterilizability. It also resists common acids and bases over a broad temperature range. Applications are; Aerospace, Aircraft, Automotive, Dental, Medical, Surgical instruments. The PPSU filament is based on the technology of Solvay.

PEI

Which is Polyether Imide (PEI) Ultem is an amorphous, amber to transparent thermoplastics with a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 217 °C and performs in continuous use up to 170 °C. This inherently flame retardant plastic has UL94 VO and 5VA ratings. Ultem 1010

the hot end, bed and ambient temps with this although High not as high as PEEK or PPSU.

This we also can print now reliably.
